ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL PAIN

International Classification of Orofacial Pain (2020)

1. Orofacial pain attributed to disorders of dentoalveolar and anatomically related structures
1.1 Dental pain (Pulpal , Periodontal pain , Gingival pain)
1.2 Oral mucosal, salivary gland and jaw bone pains (Oral mucosal pain, Salivary gland pain, Jaw bone pain)
2. Myofascial orofacial pain
2.1 Primary myofascial orofacial pain (Acute and Chronic)
2.2 Secondary myofascial orofacial pain
3. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain (Primary and Secondary)
4. Orofacial pain attributed to lesion or disease of the cranial nerves
5. Orofacial pains resembling presentations of primary headaches
6. Idiopathic orofacial pain
7. Psychosocial assessment of patients with orofacial pain

Basic pain categories: somatic, neuropathic, and psychogenic.

Somatic pain results from noxious stimulation of normal neural structures.
Neuropathic pain is caused by a structural abnormality in the nervous system.
Psychogenic pain arises from psychic causes; there is no apparent physiologic or organic basis for the pain.
