Metabolic Diseases:
An abrupt, damaging changes in the internal environment of animal (dairy
cows, pregnant ewes and sporadically in other species) occur in the period
commencing at calving and extending until the peak of lactation is reach,
due to rapid rate of exchange of fluids, salts and soluble organic material.
Production Diseases
An imbalance between the rates of input of dietary nutrients and the
output of production.
Compton Metabolic Profile Test:
An test used to predicting the occurrence of metabolic diseases in
advance by monitoring certain components of the blood on a regular basis,
which reflect the nutritional status of the animal with or without the
presence of clinical abnormalities.
The 'Rules' for metabolic profiling of dairy cattle recommend sampling from
the following groups:
1. Early lactation (EL) : between 10 and 20 days of lactation
2. Mid lactation (ML): between 50 and 120 days of lactation
3. Dry period (D): between 7 and 10 days of calving
