Advantage of Lipid :

1- Lipid supply energy (source of higher energy).
Oxidation of 1 gm of fat release 9 k-cal.
Oxidation of 1 gm of carbohydrate release 4.3 k-cal.
Oxidation of 1 gm of protein release 5.6 k-cal.
2- Act as protective coating as surface of many organs.
Ex. Kidney and ovary.
3- Cholesterol usually associated with lipid considered as a precursor of steroid and bile acid.
4- Combination of lipid with protein called lipoprotein which are very important and occur in cell membrane and mitochondria.
5- Essential F.A. is required for normal growth and function of organs. one of the functions is synthesis of prostaglandin.
6- Lipid is important dietary constituent because of fat soluble vitamins like vit. A, D, E & k.
