Contents of the Posterior Fascial
Compartment of the Leg
• The deep transverse fascia of
the leg.
• Superficial group of muscles:
Gastrocnemius, plantaris, and
soleus
• Deep group of muscles:
Popliteus, flexor digitorum
longus, flexor hallucis longus,
and tibialis posterior
• Blood supply: Posterior tibial
artery
• Nerve supply: Tibial nerve

Superficial muscle group
• Gastrocnemius
• Plantaris
• Soleus

Deep muscle group
• Popliteus
• Flexor digitorum longus
• Flexor hallucis longus
• Tibialis posterior

Nerve Supply
• Tibial Nerve
Branches:
1. Muscular branches to the
Gastrocnemous, soleus, flexor
digitorum longus, flexor hallucis
longus, and tibialis posterior
2. Cutaneous: medial calcaneal nerve.
3. Articular branch to the ankle joint
4. Medial and lateral plantar nerves

• Posterior Tibial Artery
Branches
• Peroneal artery
• Muscular
• Nutrient artery to the tibia
• Anastomotic branches around
the ankle joint
• Medial and lateral plantar
arteries.
Arterial Supply

Compartment Syndrome
It is an Increase intra-compartmental pressure leading to
compromised blood supply to the muscles – death of muscle
cells. ( treatment is simple fasciotomy)
