Maternal health
WHO 2001: Health is a complete physical, mental and
social well-being state and not only absence of disease
or ailment.
Maternal health refers to: The health of women during
pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.
While
motherhood
is often a positive
and fulfilling experience, for too
many women it is associated with
suffering, ill-health and even death.

1. Women and children form a large proportion of the population;
especially in developing countries
2. The mortality and morbidity among women and children is very
high compared to same age males.
3. There are proven and affordable ways of saving the lives of
women and children

6. Reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health access and
outcome indicators are sensitive indicators
Plus:
1 . > 200m woman become pregnant each year, 15% of
them need MCH.
2. Part of pregnancy complication are fatal.

die during 1st month, 2.8m of them will die during 1st
week and equal number of them will die in utero.
4. Bad maternal conditions account for the fourth leading
cause of death for women after HIV/AIDS, malaria, and
tuberculosis
